In the sun-soaked town of Visalia, a new solar program is helping customers save on their electric bills.
A community solar project, part of Southern California Edison’s Local Green Saver Program, provides residents with an opportunity to reduce their energy bills by subscribing to a shared solar experience.
For residents unable to install solar panels on their rooftops, this program offers an alternative way to use clean energy.
Here’s how it works: solar panels installed in nearby areas generate electricity from sunlight and feed it directly into the electric grid. Subscribers receive a share of that energy and a credit on their bill. The best part? They are guaranteed a 20% or higher reduction in their monthly SCE bill. And Visalia is the first city in California with a chance to participate in the program.
“We’re helping our customers in underserved areas save on their bills, use renewable energy and even create local jobs. It’s a win-win,” said Eva Molnar, an SCE senior manager in Customer Service.
The Local Green Saver Program targets underserved communities, helping make clean energy more accessible to those that need it the most.
SCE residential customers living within five miles of an eligible solar project may qualify if they meet the following program requirements:
- CalEnvironScreen (CES) Communities: If you are in a census tract that ranks in the top 25% based on CES data, you are eligible. Even if your tract lacks an overall CES score due to unreliable socioeconomic or health data but is in the highest 5% of CalEnviroScreen’s Pollution Burden, you are still covered.
- California Tribal Communities: You’re in!
- San Joaquin Pilot Program Participants: If your census tract border lies within 40 miles of an eligible solar project, you are part of the green revolution.
Dimension Energy, the developer, owner and operator of the project, worked with community sponsors like Proteus, Inc. to get the word out and enroll customers in this first-of-its-kind program.
The Local Green Saver Program isn’t just about solar panels; it’s a way for customers to score cost-savings that are otherwise unattainable. It also adds to California’s clean energy supply and helps reach the state’s goal of 100% clean energy use by 2045.
