INFOGRAPHIC: How to Use Camping Gear to Get Through an Emergency

Whether you’re facing a power outage or a natural disaster, many of your camping essentials can double for emergency kit items. For example, flashlights, headlamps and lanterns can help light up your home during the evening hours if you’re in the middle of an outage. In addition, consider keeping a drawer in your home stocked with charged battery packs and spare batteries to keep cell phones, laptops, flashlights and radios working.

You can also utilize an ice chest to keep perishable food cold so it doesn’t spoil in the time it takes to get the power back on, or consider firing up the grill to cook food that may not keep without the use of a refrigerator. Also, remember that it is recommended to store a three-day supply of nonperishable food and water in your home at all times in case of an emergency.

If a natural disaster leaves you without gas or electricity, pull out the sleeping bags and blankets to stay warm during the cooler evening hours. Consider keeping a backpack filled with items suited for inclement weather: sturdy shoes, long socks and water-resistant clothing.

You can also gather essential items like a first-aid kit, prescription medications, pet food and any other essentials that will keep you and your loved ones safe and comfortable.
