SCE Hiring Bilingual Energy Advisors in Asian Languages

The utility will host a virtual job information session on May 29 with the support of local Asian American community organizations.

Tammy Dung T. Le was never much of a talker while growing up. That all changed when she became a bilingual energy advisor at Southern California Edison’s Customer Contact Center nearly 12 years ago.

“At first, I didn’t know much about electricity,” said Le, who now serves as the first line of contact for Vietnamese-speaking customers, assisting them with their electric utility needs. “You get a lot of support from other experienced energy advisors behind the scenes to help you learn and grow.”

Le is working remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic, handling about 80-100 customer calls a day, the majority of which are in Vietnamese.

“It’s so important for customers to know that we provide support in multiple languages,” she said.

To expand its capacity to serve the Asian American communities, the fastest growing ethnic group in the U.S., SCE is hiring 10 energy advisors bilingual in Mandarin, Cantonese, Cambodian, Korean or Vietnamese.

“SCE energy advisors are more than customer service representatives. They are the direct connection to our 5 million customers across our vast service area,” said Daphne Ng, senior manager, SCE Customer Contact Center. “We are looking for energy advisors who can authentically engage with customers as well as help them make clean energy choices for a brighter future.”

The company is hosting a virtual job information session on May 29 to give potential applicants a chance to learn more about the job and explore career opportunities at SCE.

The virtual event will be held Friday, May 29, from 10-11:30 a.m. To register, click here.

Local Asian American community organizations, including the Asian American Professional Association (AAPA), will join the session to provide tips on resume writing, job application and online interviewing.

“We will provide vocational coaching and training to help our underserved communities be more competitive and give them an equal footing and equitable access to these great job opportunities, which can be life-changing,” said Francis Cheung, AAPA president. “It will give them greater access to well-paying jobs.”

Job benefits include competitive pay, healthcare, flexible schedules, paid full-time remote training, educational reimbursement and teleworking benefits. Successful candidates will be teleworking until further notice.

“You never stop learning at Edison. There are always opportunities to learn and grow,” said Le. “And at the end of the day, my reward is knowing that I helped our customers.”
