Helping Customers Electrify Larger Vehicles
Helping Customers Electrify Larger Vehicles
This week, local truck and bus operators who want to electrify their fleets are learning that Southern California Edison can provide much more than just the electricity to power their vehicles.
SCE representatives are at the Advanced Clean Transportation Expo at the Long Beach Convention Center to tell customers about advisory services and electric vehicle charging infrastructure programs available through the utility.
“The prospect of installing EV charging on your own can seem overwhelming,” said Carter Prescott, SCE director of Electrification. “Our team is here to help guide you through the process. We want to ensure that your project is a success and that you get the most value for your investment.”

Expo attendees who visit SCE’s booth will learn about the company’s Transportation Electrification Advisory Services, a program to assist businesses planning to purchase EVs or install EV charging equipment. SCE commercial customers can request a free EV Readiness Study to help determine the feasibility of their specific electrification project.
The process begins with a one-on-one consultation with a transportation electrification specialist. The specialist answers project-specific questions and then prepares the readiness study, which lists financial incentives available, managed charging recommendations, site planning considerations and other information to help the customer.
Customers can also apply for SCE’s Grant Assistance Program, which offers free support to help fleets apply for EV grant funding. The program is free to commercial customers with EV fleets of 50 vehicles or fewer and located in an underserved community within SCE’s service area.

For those ready to invest in EV charging for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles, SCE’s Charge Ready Transport program offers low- to no-cost electrical system upgrades to support the installation. The $358-million program provides funding to help electrify big rigs, buses, delivery trucks and other larger vehicles.
Federal funding for school buses
ACT Expo isn’t the only opportunity fleet operators have had to hear about the many resources available to help them go electric.
Recently, nearly 80 K-12 and community college transportation officials attended an SCE online event that provided a wealth of information about assistance to electrify school buses and other heavy-duty vehicles.

In addition to learning about SCE’s Charge Ready Transport program, attendees heard from the Environmental Protection Agency about applying for $500 million in federal funding available this year through the EPA’s Clean School Bus Program, which last year’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law authorized.
The legislation authorizes EPA to award grants, rebates and contracts to eligible recipients for the replacement of existing school buses with zero emission and clean school buses.
SCE customers who apply for federal funding to buy new buses can also apply for SCE’s Charge Ready Transport program to help install charging stations for those buses.
