Electric Car Savings Add Up
It’s a common myth that electric vehicles cost more than fossil-fueled cars. The up-front cost for an EV may be higher, but when you factor in rebates and fuel and maintenance costs, EVs are on a par with and can be cheaper than their gasoline-fueled counterparts. You can also feel good about driving an EV because they help clean the air. All EVs produce zero smog-forming pollutants.
To help customers make more informed car buying decisions, Southern California Edison has launched SCE Cars. SCE Cars is an easy-to-use, online car comparison tool. It shows car buyers the total cost of car ownership over the lifetime of the car.
“There’s never been a better time to consider the benefits of driving an EV. They are becoming more economical and there are more models and options to choose from, and more models are coming, “said Katie Sloan, SCE’s director of eMobility. “On top of that, Southern California has the worst air quality in the nation. Transportation accounts for nearly half of California’s greenhouse gas emissions and more than 80% of its smog-forming emissions. Everyone benefits when someone makes the switch to an EV.”
SCE Cars lets car shoppers compare all makes and models of 2018 and 2019 electric-, hybrid- and gasoline-fueled cars. The tool shows customers side-by-side comparisons of the manufacturer’s suggested retail price, estimated annual fuel costs and available rebates and incentives. Each car receives a rating based on its overall fuel costs and emission pollutants. The closer to 100, the better.
The tool also gives customers personalized fuel costs for each vehicle they select. They simply enter the number of miles they commute and drive annually and select the SCE rate plan they are on. Typically, charging an electric car at home is equal to paying less than $2 per gallon of gasoline.
In addition to fuel costs, they can also see how many miles can be driven per EV battery charge. There’s also a map of public charging stations that customers can use when they can’t charge their car at home.

Launching SCE Cars is just one way SCE is helping make it easier for drivers to go green. SCE’s Clean Fuel Reward program offers a $1,000 rebate to customers who purchase or lease a new or used EV. Unlike most rebate programs, second and third EV owners can apply for a rebate.
Customers who drive an EV can also take advantage of an EV rate plan designed to help them save money on fuel costs. Earlier this year, SCE partnered with Nissan to offer customers up to $3,500 off on the purchase of new Nissan Leaf. This offer is good through June 30.
