When Edison International’s earliest predecessors illuminated the city of Visalia on July 4, 1886, the electric utility holding company could not have imagined what would come from the emerging industry. Back then, the company was a sole energy provider in the business of bringing light to communities across the state, many of which experienced the impact of electricity for the first time.
Now, 135 years later, Edison International and its subsidiaries, Southern California Edison and Edison Energy, are at the forefront of the global energy transition, helping fight climate change by heralding a clean energy future.
“Edison is committed to the global fight against climate change even as we continue to adapt our business to the changing climate and its impacts,” said Pedro J. Pizarro, Edison International president and CEO. “We remain focused on our long-term strategy to enable the transformation to a clean energy economy that is affordable, reliable and equitable for all our customers.”

SCE continues to serve its more than 5 million utility customer accounts across a 50,000-square-mile service area, remaining steadfast in its commitment to safely deliver affordable and reliable electricity. In just five years, Edison Energy has expanded to serve national and international users, including 15 of the Fortune 50, as they navigate increasingly complex choices in response to the biggest energy challenges today.
This dedication to its customers and communities is at the core of all that Edison International does and powers its vision of the future as outlined in its 2020 Sustainability Report. Most recently, its work to advance transportation electrification earned Edison International and SCE the Edison Electric Institute’s 93rd Edison Award, the industry’s most prestigious honor in recognition of leadership, innovation and contribution to the electric industry for the benefit of all.
Edison International remains committed to transforming the electric power industry toward a clean energy future through its next century of service. Edison will do that by working to ensure residents have electricity when they need it the most, providing solutions to help commercial and industrial users meet their sustainability goals and integrating new technologies with climate adaptation in mind.
