Adapting Emergency Preparedness Plans for COVID-19
Adapting Emergency Preparedness Plans for COVID-19
Planning for earthquakes and other potential disasters can be stressful, and because the 2020 wildfire season comes during the COVID-19 pandemic, it may be especially so.
Here are some tips on how to adapt your emergency plans to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.
- Revisit your emergency preparedness plan. If your household has previously established a family meeting place, consider the location and the potential for crowds of people. Determine a new location if necessary.
- Update your basic first-aid kits with extra cloth face coverings, hand sanitizer, a noncontact thermometer and gloves.
- Update your disaster supplies kit. Add items such as soap, disinfectant wipes, hand sanitizer, additional cloth face coverings and gloves. Consider additional supplies such as sleeping bags, blankets, change of clothing, infant formula/supplies and feminine/personal hygiene items.
- Pay attention to local guidance about updated plans for evacuations and shelters, including shelters for your pets.
- Prepare for assisting seniors. Determine any special assistance vulnerable seniors may need and include them in your emergency plan. Create a support network of family, friends and others who are designated to reach out to those who are most vulnerable.
- Follow physical distancing recommendations when checking on neighbors and friends.
The COVID-19 situation is changing every day and a natural disaster could happen without any warning. It’s important to stay aware of local restrictions and continue to adjust your plans as needed.
