Honoring Those Who Keep Electricity Flowing Safely
Southern California Edison lineworkers are committed to working round the clock to keep the lights on for 15 million people across the company’s service area during disasters, heat waves, severe weather events and even the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
They are among the 120,000 workers dedicated to the job nationwide being honored on Lineworker Appreciation Day July 10. The day exists largely because of the efforts of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and California Locals 47 and 1245 to honor the legacy of Henry Miller, one of the founders of the IBEW, on the anniversary of his passing. Miller was one of the original delegates to gather in St. Louis in 1891 to form the National Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.
Edison International launched its Lineworker Scholarship program last year. The $1 million annual program is funded by Edison International shareholders and IBEW Local 47, awarding up to $25,000 per recipient to promote greater diversity among SCE’s lineworkers.
On July 10, friends and family of lineworkers are encouraged to post pictures and messages on social media using the hashtag #thankalineworker.
Below are pictures of SCE lineworkers training and on the job.
