Expanding Home EV Charging Access

SCE’s Charge Ready Home Program offers rebates for electric panel upgrades for eligible households.

California recently reached an impressive milestone of 100,000 public electric vehicle chargers installed. As the state continues its commitment to zero-emission transportation, Southern California Edison has begun its new Charge Ready Home Program to empower more communities to embrace electric transportation.

Charging at home is often the most convenient location for SCE customers to power their EVs. However, some customers require a few upgrades to make the most of home charging. Eligible SCE customers living in single-family homes who require an electrical panel upgrade to install an EV charger can take advantage of SCE’s Charge Ready Home Program, which offers an affordable solution.

“The Charge Ready Home Program is about making electrification more accessible to everyone,” said Chanel Parson, SCE’s director of Clean Energy and Demand Response. “By providing rebates for panel upgrades, we’re helping our customers prepare their homes for the clean energy future.”

The program provides rebates for home panel upgrades to income-qualifying households and customers who reside in communities most negatively impacted by multiple sources of pollution. Eligible SCE customers can apply for rebates for their electrical panel upgrade and Level 2 EV charging outlet installation through this program, with an opportunity to receive rebates up to $4,200.

Level 2 charging typically operates on a 240-volt outlet, compared to the standard 120-volt household outlet. This higher voltage allows for faster charging, but home electrical panel upgrades are sometimes necessary when installing a Level 2 charger in older homes. The new program helps eligible customers offset the costs of these upgrades.

Applying for the Charge Ready Home Program

  • Qualified program applicants must create an account and find a contractor to upgrade their electrical panel and install a Level 2 EV charger.
  • The Charge Ready Home Program website can help qualified participants find eligible electrical contractors in their area.
  • The contractor will work with customers to handle the online process and submit the necessary documents.
  • Once completed, participants or the contractor will receive a rebate from the Charge Ready Home Program.
Only a licensed electrician or contractor should perform electrical panel upgrades.

Remember, upgrading an electrical panel should never be attempted as a do-it-yourself project. It requires hiring a licensed electrician or contractor to ensure compliance with codes and safety regulations. Contractors can enroll in the program’s contractor network by visiting the program page to learn how to participate.

SCE’s Charge Ready Home Program can be combined with SCE’s
Pre-Owned EV Rebate Program. This means qualified customers can receive a rebate on their used EV purchase and get a rebate to install a Level 2 home charger, making the switch to an EV a win-win for the customer and the environment.
