Rancho Palos Verdes Land Movement - SCE Updates
Important SCE Service Updates for Impacted Customers
UPDATE
Sept. 1, 2024
Urgent Message from Southern California Edison – Power Disconnection
Dear Customer,
Due to critical safety issues mentioned in the letter you received on July 30, 2024, Southern California Edison will turn off power to your property for an estimated one to three weeks tomorrow Sept. 2, 2024, at 7:00 p.m. SCE understands that a power outage can create hardships, and the decision to shut off power is never taken lightly. The safety of community members and our employees remains our top priority.
SCE has seen a significant increase in the number of repairs needed to keep the power on safely, and we are unable to effectively monitor the situation because of the land movement in the area.
Unfortunately, the fire on Aug. 29, 2024, near Narcissa Drive demonstrates that the company cannot mitigate the public safety risk from land movement in this area. SCE must now de-energize some customers temporarily to avoid the risk of utility equipment igniting a wildfire. A Community Crew Vehicle will be in the area to offer support during this time. It will be at the Ladera Linda Community Center Tuesday, Sept. 3. Please call 1-800-250-7339 Monday through Friday, 7 a.m.-7 p.m., and Saturdays, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. for the most up-to-date information on the situation.
REMEMBER: If you see a downed power line, call 911 first and then notify SCE at 1-800-611-1911. We understand this shutoff is disruptive.
Approx. Start Time*7:00 p.m. End Time*1-3 weeks from Sept. 2, 2024
*Due to the evolving nature of the hazard, times are approximations. The outage could start or end earlier or later than estimated.

Urgent Message from Southern California Edison – Power Disconnection
Dear Customer,
Due to critical safety issues mentioned in the letter you received on July 30, 2024, Southern California Edison must turn off power indefinitely to your property starting tomorrow, Sunday, Sept. 1, 2024, at 12:00 p.m. SCE understands that a power outage can create hardships, and the decision to shut off power is never taken lightly. The safety of community members and SCE employees remain a top priority.
SCE has seen a significant increase in the number of repairs needed to safely keep the power on, and we are unable to effectively monitor the situation because of the land movement and rugged terrain in the area.
Unfortunately, the fire on Aug. 29, 2024, near Narcissa Drive demonstrates that the company cannot mitigate the public safety risk from land movement in this area. SCE must now de-energize some customers indefinitely to avoid the risk of utility equipment igniting a wildfire. A Customer Care Vehicle will be in the area to offer support during this time. We Will Be in Your Neighborhood
Dear Neighbor,
SCE is closely monitoring the dynamic conditions of the landslide and its effect on neighboring communities and its' infrastructure. You may see SCE crews or approved contractors in your neighborhood performing frequent inspections, exploring various solutions to mitigate the risk of equipment damage and quickly addressing potentially hazardous conditions. You may experience temporary road closures, overnight work or emergency scheduled outages that are intended to preserve the integrity of community safety and the electric grid.
Why is SCE performing this work?
The land movement is continuously creating stress points on the electrical grid, including to those communities near the immediate landslide area. As SCE works to deploy long-term solutions, you may experience periodic emergency outages intended to ensure that SCE continues to safely deliver reliable power to you. SCE understands this work may impact you and thanks you for your understanding.
When will work occur?
The effects of the active land movement conditions will determine the cadence of emergency work needed. Please note that emergency work may be necessary on the weekends in order to keep your community safe.
Where is the work area?
Work will be primarily focused on the infrastructure directly impacted by active land movement conditions and neighboring communities connected to the impacted portion of the grid.
Why is it impacting my community if I’m not directly in the landslide area?
The electrical grid is not a stand-alone system dedicated to a specific community. Rather, SCE's electrical grid provides for multiple interconnection points that allows for improved reliability and the opportunity to reroute power when needed. Here, the land movement has reduced or destroyed the interconnection, creating a single source of power with stress points that SCE is actively working to relieve. Some of those stress points may manifest in neighboring communities of the immediate landslide areas.
Who will do the work?
SCE and approved contractors will do the maintenance work. All workers will have identification badges.
What to expect:
- For crew safety, SCE may schedule temporary maintenance outages during construction. Multiple outages may be required to complete the work. SCE will notify you by phone, text, email or mail at least 72 hours before outages.
- During emergency outages, SCE will not be able to trigger advanced notifications. However, customers who have elected to receive digital notifications will receive updates as they become available.
- Work crews may require access to electrical equipment on your property. Unless they notice an immediate safety concern, SCE will attempt to notify you before entering your property.
- To ensure your safety during construction, there may be traffic lane and sidewalk closures, as well as designated “no parking” areas. There may also be street closures and detours, depending on permit requirements. Crews will use appropriate traffic control signs and flags.
- SCE will notify you of construction work by providing additional communications, such as door hangers, traffic signs and/or parking signs.
- There may be noise related to construction work during operating hours.
- Crews may have to dig, trim or remove trees and other plant material to safely access equipment.

Frequently asked questions and responses are available here. This FAQ was developed based on common questions from residents and local officials in recent community forums and discussions.UPDATE
July 30, 2024
On Oct. 3, 2023, the City of Rancho Palos Verdes declared a local emergency due to accelerated land movement and subsidence. Your property has been identified as being within the landslide area. Over the past 18 months, there has been considerable land movement putting the utilities serving the area and your property at risk. The purpose of this letter is to advise that Southern California Edison’s service to your property may be discontinued if conditions warrant.
Nothing is more important than the safety of our team members, customers and the public. The ground movement affecting your neighborhood has created unsafe and hazardous conditions, which have already impacted SCE's infrastructure, causing power poles to lean and power lines to fail. The impact on SCE's equipment caused by these hazardous conditions increases the risk of system failure, fire ignition or other public safety hazards.
SCE will continue to serve your community as long as it is safe to do so. SCE is working with the City of Rancho Palos Verdes and Los Angeles County officials to monitor area conditions as they evolve.
SCE recognizes the impact the potential of discontinued service has, and we appreciate your understanding. SCE will make every effort to provide timely communications regarding any impact to your service, however, the dynamic conditions in the area may not allow for advance notification. Because of this, customers in the area are encouraged to begin planning for the potential suspension of electric service.
If you have questions or need assistance, please reach out to the SCE customer service team at 1-800-250-7339 Monday through Friday, 7 a.m.-7 p.m., and Saturdays, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

Safety Tips
- Never approach or touch a downed power line. Stay 100 feet away and call 911 immediately.
- Whether overhead or on the ground, consider all power lines energized and dangerous.
- If you use a portable generator, rely on a qualified installer or licensed electrician to connect it to SCE’s system or to your home’s wiring.
- If you use a generator, place it outdoors and plug individual appliances directly into it, using a heavy-duty extension cord. Connecting generators directly to household circuits creates “backfeed,” which is dangerous to repair crews. Please consult the manufacturer’s manual for operating the generator.
